I can't place a diagnal item next to a straight item (even though it would perfectly fit and be fine) but cups, plates, and bowls are allowed to clip through eachother when it KNOWS I want to stack them evenly?!

Good idea. The way they seem to intersect looks weird because the polygons clash. Gym weights can stack on a stand (Santa centre job) so using a similar mechanic could work for this.
